How to Snake Clear a Drain?

A clogged drain can make a sink, shower, or toilet completely unusable, forcing you to find alternative solutions or delay essential daily tasks.  But a clog is more than just a minor inconvenience.  Stagnant water due to clogs can become a breeding ground for bacteria, germs, and mold, potentially triggering respiratory issues and other illnesses.  Ignoring a clogged drain can turn a seemingly small problem into a major, expensive plumbing issue requiring professional repair.  When left unattended, clogs can lead to flooding, corrosion, or even burst pipes.

So how can you clear a clogged drain?  How do you use a drain snake?  Should I call a plumber when I have a clogged drain?  Keep reading to find out!

How to unclog a drain?

Several methods exist for unclogging a drain, including:

  • Natural Solutions: Minor clogs can sometimes be resolved with DIY drain cleaners like baking soda and vinegar, dish soap, or boiling water.  Be wary of store-bought, chemical drain cleaners, as these products can damage your pipes over time.  Chemical drain cleaners should be used sparingly or not at all.
  • Plunger: To use a plunger for a clogged drain, fill the clogged sink with enough water to cover the plunger’s bell. Place the plunger over the drain and plunge up and down firmly to create suction and dislodge the clog.
  • Drain Snake: For stubborn clogs, a drain snake, also known as a drain auger, can be used to physically reach and pull out the clog.

How to snake clear a drain?

A drain snake is a thin, flexible metal cable used to remove clogs from pipes that are too deep or stubborn for other methods to clear.  To clear a clog using a drain snake, follow these steps:

  1. Prepare the Area: To use a drain snake, you need to remove the drain cover on a shower or bathtub (this is typically the overflow cover) or the pop-up stopper on a sink.  These are the typical access points to the P-trap and drain line.  Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands from bacteria and debris.
  2. Insert and Advance the Snake: Place the coiled end of the drain snake into the opening and slowly push it into the pipe.  Using gentle, consistent pressure, push and rotate the handle to help the snake navigate through bends.
  3. Find the Clog: Continue feeding the snake until you reach the clog, which will be a significant point of resistance.  Once you hit the clog, tighten the clamp on the snake to lock the cable in place.  Rotate the handle clockwise to either break up the obstruction or hook onto it.
  4. Remove the Clog: Carefully pull the snake back out of the drain.  Discard any material or debris in a trash can.
  5. Flush the Drain: Run hot water at full force for a few minutes to flush away any remaining debris and test to see if the drain clears.  If the clog persists, repeat the process.

When to call a plumber for a clogged drain?

With the correct skills and knowledge, many homeowners can perform simple, DIY plumbing repairs such as unclogging a drain.  However, there are times when it’s best to call a plumber, including:

  • Persistent Clogs: Professionals can identify the underlying cause of persistent or complex clogs, preventing future problems.
  • Multiple Affected Drains: When more than one drain in your home is slow to drain or backing up simultaneously, it usually indicates a blockage in the main sewer line.
  • Water Backup: Water backing up into your shower or sink often indicates a significant blockage.
  • DIY Efforts Fail: If you’ve tried to clear the clog without success, a plumber has the specialized equipment to resolve the issue.
  • You are Unsure: If at any time you are unsure about a plumbing issue, including a clogged rain, it’s best to call a professional.  Addressing deep clogs quickly can prevent further damage and costly repairs.
